Academic background
I worked in higher education computing centres for 10 years before becoming an independent
IT consultant and developer, and have maintained my academic links.
From 1990 to 2001 I gave regular courses at HND and degree level.
A selection of course notes is provided below.
Networking and Data Communications Course
This course was given over a number of years at Brunel University up to the academic year 2000-2001.
Since it places emphasis on the basic principles of networking and communications,
most of the material is relevant today.
This is in large part due to the genius of the initial designers of the Internet and the Web;
their forward-thinking creation resulted in an extendable system whose underpinning design
rarely if ever needed fundamental revision.
Comparative Programming Languages Course
This course was given at the University of Surrey in 2000.
