Valdottavo 2005
August 27th - September 2nd

The members' site did not make it this year - but in compensation, I have posted a list of music. Send me anything else you may have and would like to play.

Valdottavo

Valdottova is a small village (literally, the eighth valley), in the heart of Tuscany, about 20Km to the north of Lucca, and 60Km north-east of Pisa (which is just off the bottom of the map). For the five years , from 1999 to 2003, we have been running a small orchestral/chamber workshop in Studio Camnitzer, under the direction of Levon Parikian. The atmosphere has been that of an extended house-party, and a significant number of people have returned year after year. Follow the links at the left for more detail.

This year, Lev cannot be with us, due to a very small family commitment, so we shall be concentrating on Chamber Music, with the possibility of professional coaching - to be finalised soon.

Flautist needed!

We desperately need a flautist, since two successive ones have dropped out (the latest this morning, Monday 22nd), so if there are any out there ...

Format and standards

The overall standard of players is that of a medium to good amateur orchestra - or, alternatively, for most players to feel at home in a piece such as the Schubert Octet. This year we have for a wind quintet (flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, horn), and a string quartet . They would play as wind and string ensembles for part of the time, and come together for mixed works.

Mornings will run from 1000 to 1300, and consist of time-tabled chamber music sessions. There will be a chance for members to make requests, and influence the choice of works, preferably before the end of August.

A choice of music will be provided but, as with all these events, members are encouraged to bring their own. A selection of available works will be posted and updated as we are notified.

Afternoons (1400 to 1700) will be semi-free format, but again, members can make requests in advance for specific works. A suggested timetable will be posted by the end of June.

Evenings are traditionally given to group meals (the hostel, Le Vigne, has full cooking facilities), visits to Lucca or to local restaurants, jazz concerts in Barga (there is no compulsion to join in). Time will soon run out!

Timetable

As in previous years, playing days will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  Wednesday is for trips to the seaside, Florence, Pisa, Castelnuovo, or wherever you choose.  Lunch will be provided on playing days.  There will be a concert on Thursday night, in a local village school, with a pre-concert light meal.

Arrival will be on Saturday 27th August, and departure on Saturday 3rd September.

If you want to extend your holiday and explore the region further, there is room for a limited number of people to stay on in the hostel for upto another week for a daily cost in the region of £30. This to be finalised soon.

Other

A couple of  Maps of the area are shown, including directions once you get to Valdottavo.  For details of the studio and hostel, you might like to visit the Studio Camnitzer web site.

Charges and payment

The cost is £160 for the week. At this short notice, we are prepared to be flexible, since air fares have risen.

A deposit of £50 will guarantee you a place. Full payment is required by the beginning of August. Both are non-refundable (although if we do find a replacement we will relax this).

Coming Soon

I shall be building a more sophisticated web site with a proper database, both for music and participants, over the coming weeks.  You will be informed of updates by e-mail.

A registration and members' page will also be available. Meanwhile, you can contact me from the Email link on the left
